演題 :" Exploring the contributions of instruction to different types of L2knowledge "

講演要旨:
Research in instructed SLA has led to a growing consensus that instruction is beneficial for L2 learning. Several questions remain, however, including whether certain types of instruction are more effective than others and the extent to which they may lead to different types of L2 knowledge. I will address these questions by reporting on the findings from two quasi-experimental instructional intervention studies investigating the contributions of instruction to the development of implicit and explicit L2 knowledge. The first study examined the effects of Isolated and Integrated Form-Focused Instruction (FFI) on both types of knowledge. Integrated FFI is defined as instruction in which attention to form is embedded within communicative practice whereas in Isolated FFI it is separated from communicative practice (Spada & Lightbown, 2008). Two groups of adult ESL learners received either Integrated or Isolated FFI on the use of the English passive. Their progress was measured by two tasks hypothesized to be relatively independent measures of implicit and explicit knowledge: an oral production task (OPT) and a written error correction task (ECT). In the second study the effects of integrated FFI on adult ESL learners’ implicit knowledge of the passive were examined using the original OPT and an oral elicited imitation task (EI). The findings are discussed in relation to task design features and learner variables considered to play important roles in the measurement of implicit and explicit L2 knowledge.
