[本文より]When the new prime minister took office, pundits, journalists, and politicians worried about whether Mr. Koizumi would be able to implement the reforms he deemed necessary for the country. As one representative of Parliament pointed out, he would be unable to achieve reform without compromising himself. Others indicated repeatedly that because of numerous variables, carrying out structural reform would be impossible. In a sense, they were suggesting that Japan has fallen prey to structural inertia; even the most ardent of reformers will be unable to crack what Kobo Abe once called the S.S. Labyrinth.
